Vegetarian Ideas For Dining Out At An Asian Restaurant
Vegetarians often have a hard time deciding what to eat when dining out. This is especially true when it comes to Chinese restaurants where so many of the meals contain meat or fish. However, as long as you prepare before you go out, it won't be a problem. The main thing is to know what you can eat, and also what questions to ask when it comes time to place your order with the server.
This list will cover three meals you can eat.
General Tao's Tofu: A Spin on the Classic
General Tao's chicken is a classic entrée found on most Chinese menus. It's so popular that many Asian restaurants will have a tofu variation. It's almost identical in all aspects to the original chicken version, except it is made with tofu instead of chicken.
This is a perfect dish for people who love spicy meals and also want some protein in their dish. Many vegetarian options are plant heavy (vegetable fried rice or vegetable lo mein) and do not have much protein. Tofu has lots of protein. So, if you are the type who wants a protein-rich meal, but still want it meat-free, then this is the perfect choice.
Gyoza and Dumplings
Dumplings are another ideal choice for vegetarians. You can choose to have vegetable filled dumplings (or gyoza). They will normally come with a dipping sauce; either ginger or soy sauce-based. While these are normally not designed to be a full dinner, you can combine them with another side such as broccoli or rice. Most Chinese restaurants will serve dumplings. If you go to a Japanese or Thai restaurant you should look for Gyoza. These are similar to Chinese dumplings. The main difference between the gyoza and dumplings is that the gyoza has a thinner wrapper.
Massaman Curry Soup with Noodles
If you are going to a Thai restaurant, you should look at their noodle soups and curries. One of the most famous curries is a named massaman. This is a rich and creamy curry soup that is made with coconut milk and spices. You can have your server include tofu instead of chicken. The main thing you will want to be wary of is the broth. Some places might use a fish stock in their curry soup. So, it's important that you check with your server, even if you are planning on ordering the tofu version.
